Costco

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Costco has always been a mythical place in my mind. It was an amalgam of Home Depot, Target, Fred Meyer, the Home Shopping Network, the Mall, and everything else. What is Costco? It’s where restaurants buy hundreds of pounds of toilet paper and fish fillets. Where parents buy a lifetime supply of diapers. Where membership feels like a gift. So I was overwhelmed when I went there. I bought Tillamook cheese, coke, nitrile gloves, and toilet paper.

Joel plans a dinner

Monday, August 15th, 2011

On Friday me and Jen had little prep to do in the morning, so we wandered over to Courier Coffee. Joel gave us the rundown on a big dinner he was planning that night. He had made a list of all the ingredients in the menu, then when we were there he copied the list over again. Joel is big into lists. He puts masking tape on his fridge and writes the current ingredients. He copies lists over and over, revising and polishing. Me and Jen both discussed with Joel, separately, the menu for his upcoming dinner. It’s always good to get feedback.

3 wheeled vehicles

I saw these two cars on the street during my commute Wednesday. The junked truck was being sold to Blue Sky motors.

Birthday

Friday, June 10th, 2011

June 9th was my birthday and I’ve decided to close the cart for the rest of the week. I apologize to anyone who stopped by and just found closed shutters with no explanation. Martha drove me up to Eagle Creek where we went on a beautiful hike.

Afterwards we went to the City Grill on the 30th story of big pink for a drink. What a crazy scene! 80′s decor, tourists and burly businessmen, women with lots of makeup and piano transcriptions of classic rock.

At the base of the building was a flower arrangement in the shape of America, with Oregon separated out with a field of clover.

We had dinner at Little Bird. I was wondering what kind of place this was. What would Gabe Rucker be doing after Le Pigeon? It’s actually more conservative and the food is traditional French fare.

As an appetizer I had lamb belly with peas and mint. Really tasty.
