Weekend meals

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The arugula in the garden is just ready to eat. The leaves are small and thick and soft, tasting sweet and mildly peppery. The radishes are being eaten by ants. They chew into the tops, often biting the leaves off. But fortunately they are just ready to eat as well.

For helping Lindsey and Elle move into their new house, Lindsey’s mom made pizzas for us. They were really good and quite unique. She made a spicy barbecue style tomato sauce with sausage, and also a thick dill paste sauce for another. I’ll have to try some of this next time I make pizza.

Compost

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

I turned the compost over this weekend. After I removed the plywood board keeping the pile of dirt and veggies inside, this is what I saw. The line between beautiful black dirt and leaves and vegetables is pretty defined!

Adding supers

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I tended to the bees for the first time since they flew in last summer. The colony is strong and lots of bees flew out as I opened it up. I added the first super, which is for gathering the honey. A queen restrictor was also added between the super and the deeps.
