Bertha’s picnic

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

It’s so cold outside and I’d hate for the squirrelies to go hungry. I leave nuts out for them on a perch high enough up a tree that the cats can’t bother them. I’ve gotten pretty good at differentiating them. This is Bertha because she’s chubby, has not very much brown, and has a thin little tail.

Bertha and her Boyfriend

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

The supermarkets are now carrying the mixed nuts in the shell, including the large but tasteless brazil nut. I’ve been stocking up on this and giving some now and then to the squirrels. Axel has been, sadly, kicked out of the house by Bertha’s boyfriend, a chubby guy with a brown belly and tail and very large testicles. Bertha herself has been gaining weight, (or is she preggers?) and they’re all getting more bold, burying the nuts in plain view of the cats. But perhaps the cats have realized that it’s hopeless trying to catch a squirrel in the prime of life. They watch intently for a bit, then doze off.
