roof-beam-joint

Here’s a joint I’ve been working on for the last few days. There are 3 of these 4×4′s and they keep the walls from spreading apart under the stress of the roof. They also hold some of the roof beams in place. It was fun to make but perhaps unnecessarily complicated. However, I’ve been enamored of joints like this ever since I visited Japan last year.

dc-vegetarian

A friend of a friend has a friend, and this first friend tipped me off about their friends friends new food cart. I had lunch there with a friend (a different friend) and we got an apple, goat cheese, spinach, mayonaise, and mustard sandwich on whole wheat bread, (mayonaise and goat cheese is a good combination!); smoked tempeh, tomato, lettuce, and mayonaise, again on whole wheat; and a peanut, barley, tomato soup. They’re at SW 3rd and Washington, ensconced in a little cluster of carts. They were really good and next time I go maybe I’ll try the Satan cheese sandwich.

The amazing thing is that they started putting this cart together one month ago! Another food cart vendor also makes custom carts and they ordered one from him. I’m amazed at their speed. Here I am at month 12.

Pickles and Jam

pickles2

In preperation for this weeked I’m doing some pickle and jam tests. Apricot with vanilla and honey.  Peach pickles with cloves, cinnamon, and ginger. Squash with fennel fronds and garlic. Blueberry pickles with cloves, ginger, and lemon peel. Rhubarb jam. Mustard with sauvignon blanc, coriander, honey, and cinnamon. Mustard is a strange thing, the so called flavor-profile is a very intricate thing and not really the taste of mustard seed itself. Or so it seems from making some mustard. I need to do some more work on this.

The rhubarb jam was made with this years harvest, all 24 ounces of it. With the leaves I’ve made insecticide.

hood

Jeremy Carlson has had my hood sitting in his truck for a few weeks now, waiting for me to finish the stud frame so he can install it. He called me up this morning informing me he was going to drop it off at my place because his truck was too crowded. The only spot for it was the backyard. Hopefully the cats don’t piss all over it. In any case I’ll cover it up tomorrow with some tarps.

Meanwhile I filled the grey water tanks up again this morning to test out if my leak patching worked. I had wrapped fiberglass impregnated with PVC cement around the leaky unions. There were 4 leaks, 2 were fixed. Now I have 200 gallons of water sitting in the tanks and I’m not sure what to do with it. Dumping it down the sewer seems quite wasteful but I’m not sure how to get it into the garden…
