A hike in forest park

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

On Saturday I went on a hike in forest park. I walked 17 miles and discovered a few things of interest, including the fact that mosquitos are quite prevalent in the spring, (or the soggy days of summer.)

I brought along an Afghan shawl that my father sent me. After the hike I had a late dinner at Clyde Commons. I was quite smelly from the hike, and this shawl must have made me look quite peculiar. I took this photo when I got home at 12:30.

Plums or cherries, and huckleberries?

Monday, July 5th, 2010

I was running through Reed canyon, on the north bank footpath, and tried some fruit. It seemed of a wild variety, as I couldn’t tell at first whether the small red fruits hanging in clusters on a branch were apples, cherries, or plums. They tasted like plums, but they could just as well could have been cherries. I also saw something resembling a huckleberry, but with lots of seeds. I masticated it then spit it out. It was sweet and tasted good.

Cabinets, countertops.

Chris is now working on the cabinets. They all have sliding doors like the display cabinet. Chris wanted me to post a photo of the CAD drawings. As you can see, they are very detailed.

I’ve also sent off the measurements for the stainless countertop to Scappoose. I’m aiming to be done with construction in 2 weeks!

Salt from Namibia, Afghanistan, and Ochoco

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Elena has been trying to send me a birthday presents for weeks. Today it arrived. It was a heavy package, the shape of a large lump of charcoal. I unwrapped it. Thick grease covered the inner wrapping. It smelled like a half baked swamp.

But inside was a pristine lump of fresh crystalized salt!

In a strange coincidence of events, my father sent me from Afghanistan military grade gatorade…

… and I have just returned last week from a mineral scouting expedition.

Left to right; chalcedony colored from red cinnabar; the more common crystaline chalcedony; a fossilized leaf from the town of Fossil.
